Hats off to Inventive Abe, the only President to hold a patent.

Abraham Lincoln wasn’t just a beloved US President—he was a patent holder as well. His 1849 invention, Buoying Vessels Over Shoals let boats pass through shallow water without running aground and losing its cargo. His inspiration came from traveling between the Mississippi River and Great Lakes. You can still see his patent model, which he whittled out of wood, at the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of American History, about a one score and seven minute walk from his memorial.
