“Pass the computerized condiment, please."

Look out ketchup and mustard. We’ve gone back to the cognitive kitchen to create Bengali Butternut BBQ Sauce, an unexpected blend of squash, Thai chilies, tamarind and a dozen more ingredients that have never before been slathered together on a chicken wing.

It’s got a slow, warm heat and a kick that becomes even more to savor when you discover that it was concocted by something that has no taste buds.  Cognitive computers from IBM Research modeled quintillions of recipes based on thousands of ingredient combinations to predict what new tastes people would find surprising and delicious. And voilà!

The sauce was only bottled for a limited run, but you can whip up a batch at home with this recipe. We even added a label to print. Bon appétit.

Bengali Butternut BBQ Sauce

300g butternut squash, diced
200g white wine

We came. We cooked. We conquered Texas-sized hunger pangs. The IBM Food Truck has packed its bags, put away its aprons and high-tailed it out of Austin. Thanks to everyone who stopped by to treat their tastebuds to the culinary skills of man and machine – that is, the Institute of Culinary Education chefs and the IBM cognitive computing system. Together they took SXSW by the horns and showed everyone their cognitively-concocted recipes, like the tasty Swiss-Thai Asparagus Quiche represented by this fun GIF. Until the Food Truck hits the road again, bon appétit.

The Institute of Culinary Education has found a new way to kickstart their creative process long before the first vegetable is chopped. They’re using a cognitive computing system made by IBM researchers that can learn and even create in the way we humans do. So far the technology is being used to design more creative recipes, like the tasty Turkish Bruschetta this GIF is based on. But in the future, it could invent healthier recipes. Gluten-free recipes. More sustainable recipes. And countless new ways to make you go “yum,” “mmmmmm,” “soooooooo good” and “delish.”
