The Science Behind Patent No. 9087304

We’ve all been served up search results we weren’t sure about, whether they were for “the best tacos in town” or “how to tell if your dog has eaten chocolate.” With IBM Patent no. 9087304, you no longer have to second-guess the answers you’re given. This new tech helps cognitive machines find the best potential answers to your questions by thinking critically about the trustworthiness and accuracy of each source. Simply put, these machines can use their own judgment to separate the right information from wrong.

The Science Behind Patent No. 9117446

In today’s cognitive era, machines can listen and talk back to us. But can they understand the emotional nuances of our conversations? You betcha – with IBM’s Patent No. 9117446. This system detects and assigns emotion to text in TTS (text to speech) applications, so machines can read and express emotion in response to what we say, how we say it, our facial expressions and body language. And we don’t have to wait an age to see it at work. Emotion-detecting robots are already serving customers in banks and coffee shops, and keeping nursing home residents entertained – with each robot able to converse with humans and express themselves on an emotional level. So the next time you say you love technology, it might just love you back.

Happy Inventors’ Day! Wait, the inventors have their own day? Of course they do! They take creative risks in the name of making life easier, so they’ve earned it. This day also marks the unofficial end to our celebration of 22 record breaking years. A reminder that although over six million patents exist, somehow there are always more to be conceived. So don’t just sit there, get on with it!

Deleting Shifty Behavior
Another innovation from 22 record years

Can you spot the difference between the two actions above? Got it? Not quite? Convinced both sides are exactly the same? IBM Patent No. 8,650,080 has your back when your back is turned. This innovation can detect even the slightest change in cyber behavior, for each and every one of us has distinct mannerisms and preferences, a virtual fingerprint of sorts, whether we realize it or not. Think of the patent as a buddy who is looking out for you—hmm, Christine usually goes for the right shift and now she’s all left. Wait, Christine, is that really you?

“Love.” It’s Complicated.
Another innovation from 22 record years

You’re an alien on Mars who has a date with a gal on Earth (thanks to an online site!) You’ve memorized every single word in the human cannon so that you can converse effortlessly. GLITCH. Although you technically know every word she’s saying, you’ve absolutely no idea what she’s saying. Because language processing requires conceptual abilities unique to the human brain, it’s truly noteworthy that with IBM Patent No. 8,639,497, researchers have made countless developments in the field of Natural Language Processing. As for love, you alien, good luck, it’s a phenomenon even the brightest of humans can’t fully explain.

Automatic Effort
Another innovation from 22 record years

On your way to work, you receive a message from the newly-awarded IBM Patent No. 8,781,668 that asks: “The city you are about to enter has a high smog level, today. Mind if the city switches your gas engine to electric while you’re in town?” Soon you’ll be able to update your vehicle’s on-board software to have this civic conversation, and drive to the destination knowing full well that you are contributing to a cleaner atmosphere—a destination in itself.
